Ophiuchus and what’s my sign? February 1, 2011© Chica de las Estrellas

Indeed there are many different ways to measure things in our earthly realm, let’s take for example inches versus centimeters. In time, we have various systems as well and in space, well that is a whole different ball of wax.
You see regardless of whether you are measuring in Tropical Time, Sidereal Time or Space Time it all involves a starting point. The obvious one is “Wherever you are, there you are!”
So, here’s the curve ball: Everyone is right and there is really no need to point a finger and say one is more correct or better than another. You see just as in life, everything is a matter of perspective.
So, really, tell me, who is to say what is correct? Sure we use “science” to measure and tell us information but long before clocks, people were telling time.
Here is the skinny on the styles:
Tropical Astrology, which I have received a degree in, is based on the time measurement from Equinox to Equinox and from Solstice to Solstice. Have those moved? Well actually yes but Spring is still basically where Spring should be. The fact is some of my colleagues have shifted to using Sidereal time. I am considering it. This would in fact change your natal chart quite a bit by varying amount based on when you were born. The older you are, the less of a shift.
Sidereal is a time-keeping system astronomers use to keep track of the direction to point their telescopes to view a given star in the night sky. A sidereal day is approximately 23 hours, 56 minutes in length. Add up all those missing minutes and you will start to question your timepiece! It truly measures the timing of the previous point. In actuality, the vernal equinox itself precesses very slowly in a westward direction relative to the fixed stars. Ask yourself this: Is any star truly fixed? How the heck would you know? Really!
But from our perspective here on the blue rock we call Earth, indeed things have shifted. Kunkle bunked things up trying to fit everything into yet another perspective. Are you confused yet? I am becoming so.
In an effort clarify this without rambling on for pages here I go. Trust me, I have been thinking about this since I first started practicing Astrology as a teen and long before I went to college for it!
Last year I went to the Bahamas to study Jyotish formally. This is an Eastern style of Astrology which uses a different Mythology all together. The key point is yes, Astrologers use time and space to plot all of this stuff, but it is Mythology which tells the rich stories and makes sense of it all. In Tropical style, the Planets and Stars can be of either gender. In Jyotish the Planets are male and the Stars, female. OK, right there we can see major differences in the interpretation data. I asked my teacher to really, honestly tell me if he could say which is better if both he and I can reach the same conclusion using different systems and mythologies. He said, no.
Add to the mix other forms like Chinese Astrology and by the way Happy Chinese New Year to you in this Year of the Rabbit, Mayan Astrology, they had a completely different measurement of time and Arabic just to name a few.
Back to who the heck is Ophiuchus. Yes, Ophiuchus has always been there and when I was in school for Astrology we used him. Most people are not ready for a 13th sign, you see, 13 has a bad rap. I however love the number and see it as relative to Venus. That is a topic for another day. The fact is, Ophiuchus has had his foot in between Scorpio and Sagittarius all along, so if you are a late Scorpio or early Sagittarius, you are Ophiuchun! But, I am still treating you as a Scorpio or a Sagittarius.
Here’s the deal, each culture looked up instead of looking a some ridiculous little keyboard! They related to what was around them and allowed themselves to be guided by what they saw and felt. They learned to tell stories to pass the knowledge on. So, their techniques live on and some of us use them.
If you would like to know the comparison of your Tropical Chart to your Sidereal using the Greek Mythology, I am happy to do this for you. Also, I have a whole new suit of interpretive programs which will interpret your natal charts in many different ways. These are created by Esoteric Software in Australia and I am very grateful to be offering this service to you. I have 13 different interpretive reports to choose from.
